An Introduction to Table Loom Weaving

Ever fancied having a go at weaving, but don’t know where to start?! Then this is the workshop for you!

Using prepared table looms, you will be introduced to the basics of table loom weaving.  You will be taught basic weave structures and encouraged to experiment with a variety weft yarns in many fibres, textures and colours, in order to take home a collection of technical and creative woven samples.  You’ll be delighted at what you will achieve in this one-day workshop. Detailed handouts will be provided.

Suitable for: complete novices with good manual dexterity

Please bring: a notebook and pen to make your own notes if you wish.

Maximum participants: 3

Tea, coffee and snacks are provided throughout the day. Please bring your own packed lunch, or we are next door to the Pottery Cafe where there is a good range of meals to choose from.

Experimental Weaving

This is a vibrant and creatively experimental workshop suitable for both beginners and more experienced weavers who would like to expand their repertoire, exploring hand manipulation processes, with an exciting array of weft yarns.  Techniques will include tufting, knotting, discontinuous weft, leno, soumac, loops and more. As with all of Laura’s workshops, there will be a host of samples for you to handle and be inspired by.

Participants will need to come with their own prepared table loom (shaft loom or rigid heddle) - this can be in any set-up and warp yarn, but if you would like to discuss your ideas, please get in touch with Laura directly - info@laurathomas.co.uk

Learn to make a warp and thread up your table loom (2 day workshop)

Receive personal tuition and guidance in designing and making a warp, and then expertly threading up your loom.

Using your own handloom and warping frame/mill, learn how to plan a warp and make all the necessary technical calculations. You will then go through the complete process of making the warp and threading up your loom. You will conclude day 2 by starting to weave and receiving personal tuition in weave techniques, processes and materials relevant to your ambitions for your weaving project.

Detailed handouts will be provided.

Suitable for warping novices but who have some weave experience.

PLEASE BRING: your 4, 8 or 16 shaft table loom and warping mill/frame, notebook, pencil, pen, rubber, calculator, ruler with inch markings, masking tape or sellotape and fabric scissors. You may also want to bring a camera so you can take pictures to act as a personal aide-memoire for the process. NB if you’ve not yet bought a warping mill or frame, you can request to borrow one of Laura’s.

WARP YARN: Upon booking, please email Laura info@laurathomas.co.uk to discuss your warp yarn choice. With guidance, you can buy your own yarn in your chosen colour palette from recommended suppliers. Alternatively, you can work with lambswool or cotton yarns that Laura has in the studio for a small additional fee.

WEFT YARN: you are welcome to bring your own selection of weft yarns, but you can also experiment with those in Laura's yarn store. This is included in the cost of the workshop.
