'Textu(r)al Weaving', Aberystwyth Arts Centre, 16th Nov

The inherent language of textiles has long been a source of inspiration and intrigue for me - it was the subject of my MA dissertation, and something I explored in one of my very first professional collaborative projects back in 2003.

I was therefore delighted when Aberystwyth University academic Martina Saric discovered my textile artwork, and could see the traces of language within it. Tying in with her creative writing research, she invited me to take part in this forthcoming panel event 'Textu(r)al Weaving' at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on the 16th Nov.

Info from Martina:.

"Over a series of conversations and workshops with researchers and practitioners, we will discover how the tactile practices of weaving, stitching, and knotting inform our reading and writing of literary texts. Our panel discussion with renowned textile artists Anya Paintsil, Laura Thomas, and Professor Berit Bliesemann de Guevara will delve into textile arts as a form of storytelling, in which each thread forms a tactile text to be read and experienced through the body.

From questions of identity, myth, and belonging to acts of resistance, tactile forms have an agency of their own in writing narratives. Adopting new approaches to story-making will help us explore in turn text as a tapestry—a woven form—with special attention to sensory modes of expression.

From text to textile and back to text, the project underscores the importance of embodied thought and is part of a broader call to move readers, writers, and researchers out of the disembodied laboratory of abstract ideas and into physical engagement with thought, cloth, and writing."
